Our Solution Story

University of West Georgia, located in Carrollton, is a public university with over 13,000 students. The Wolves play intercollegiate sports in NCAA Division II as a member of the Gulf South Conference, with a football stadium with a capacity of 9,500 seats.

We partnered with the university to upgrade their football stadium’s outdated sound system, improving sound quality and distribution as well as enhancing the overall fan experience.

AUDIO + CONTROL

The football stadium’s audio system dated back to the original construction ten years earlier and had deteriorated to the point of falling apart. Sound quality was muddled, and the positioning of speakers at the press box required blasting the home stands in order to get sufficient volume on the visitors’ side.

dB’s audio engineers designed a system that positioned speakers in the scoreboard, distributing clear and powerful sound equally to all areas of the arena.

As Associate Athletic Director Matthew Clay says, “We needed to get the sound pumping and jamming in this venue, to raise and elevate the energy level.” Already familiar with Danley Sound Labs’ top-of-the-line speakers in other sports venues, and having seen how quality audio could actually influence the outcome of a game, the athletics department sought out dB Integrations for their expertise in Danley systems.

Audio

dB came to UWG’s stadium to demonstrate several loudspeaker options, including the new J7-95 (the most recent in Danley’s Jericho series), which proved to be a perfect fit, producing the crisp, clear highs and the rich, deep lows that West Georgia’s staff desired. Just two of Danley’s J7 full-range speakers provide coverage for both home and visitor seating. The J7-95 is a single-source, high-output loudspeaker capable of covering very large audiences with ultra-clear and consistent audio.

While powerful, the J7 is also the lightest and smallest product in the Jericho series, weighing just 265 pounds and measuring three feet by two feet. So the stadium’s existing scoreboard could easily handle the weight of two such speakers mounted to its frame. A climate-controlled rack, also mounted on the scoreboard, houses the two DNA 20k amplifiers.

Two Danley BC-415 subwoofers were installed at field level, behind the end zone and in front of a seven-foot retaining wall running the width of the stadium. These subwoofers provide the pounding low-frequency response to both the playing field and the stadium’s seating, giving the “thump” that is proven to energize the fans.

An Allen & Heath SQ6 digital mixing console serves as the main control for all audio systems throughout the stadium. Because the audio control room is behind a glass window, we also installed a Danley GO2-8CX as a reference monitor for the audio engineer.

Recap

Fans of the Wolves and their opponents can now have a memorable game-day experience in UWG’s University Stadium. The audio is clear and powerful, reaching every corner of the field and stands without blasting anyone’s eardrums. “When the right song’s playing and it’s bumping, the crowd reacts to it,” says Clay in summary. The process of working with dB Integrations “was fantastic from start to finish.”
